With help from his childhood friends Terk and Tantor, Tarzan would grow to become the valiant protector of the apes and the jungle at largeall the while never. Commonly known as the Ape Man, Tarzan was rescued and raised by a colony of apes after his parents were killed by the bloodthirsty Sabor. Tarzan is the titular protagonist of Disney's 1999 animated feature film of the same name.

Then, of course, Katzenberg left Disney – Lima was approached a second time by Michael Eisner, this time with the idea of doing the film at the main Feature Animation studio, which he agreed to.To prepare, Lima read the original Edgar Rice Burroughs novel, and he took one key image away from it: that of two hands being held up against one another. Lima was reluctant to do this, however, because he felt the animators there would be too inexperienced to handle the project. Yet we’re the first filmmakers to have ever taken Tarzan from page to screen and presented the character as Burroughs intended.”The initial plan was to have Kevin Lima direct it following his work on A Goofy Movie Jeffrey Katzenberg approached him with the offer in late 1994, intending to have the film done at a Canadian satellite studio for television animation. Thomas Schumacher, then the President of Feature Animation at Disney, was surprised that there hadn’t been any previous attempts to animate the story, saying “Here is a book that cries out to be animated.
By early 1995, the two of them had secured the rights to the story from the estate of the author and the film entered the early stages of production. In January that year, Tab Murphy was brought on board to work on the story, having just finished work on The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The image of touching hands was first conceived as an idea for how Tarzan realizes he and Jane are physically the same.” After two months of studying the book, Lima asked his friend Chris Buck (then finishing work as a supervising animator on Pocahontas) to join him as co-director. It became a sort of metaphor for Tarzan’s search for his identity Lima said that he “was looking for something that would underscore Tarzan’s sense of being alike, yet different from his ape family.
They visited Amboseli National Park and the Masai Mara, as well as Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and the Sweetwaters Chimp Sanctuary. Core members of the team including both directors set out for Kenya in March 1996, spending two weeks on safari before going on from there to Uganda to study wild gorillas in their natural habitat. The two worked closely together for around three years to put the film’s soundtrack together and Collins went on to dub his music into several foreign languages for the international releases.Once again, a research trip was also a central part of the production process. As well as this, the character of Kerchak was drastically reworked into a protector of the gorilla clan rather than the savage rogue of the book. For the music, Genesis frontman Phil Collins was hired as the songwriter, while Mark Mancina was brought in to create the score, having previously worked on the music for The Lion Kingand its stage adaptation. The restructuring of the final act necessitated the creation of a villain in order to endanger the gorillas and keep Tarzan from leaving, so Clayton was born, becoming Jane and Porter’s suave and two-faced guide.
By the following March, everything had begun to come together and test screenings were received with mounting excitement. All in all, Tarzan was a great note to end the era on, but something strange has happened in the nearly nineteen years since its debut. Danton later expressed delight with early screenings of the film and wrote the directors a personal letter of congratulations. Gorillas in Bwindi National ParkThe animation for the film was split between the Burbank, Orlando and Paris studios, with the latest sensation being a new piece of computer animation software called “Deep Canvas.” This allowed the team to create richly detailed three-dimensional backgrounds for their 2D characters to appear in, as well as providing them with endless special effects opportunities. In March of 1997, the Burbank team made a visit to Burroughs’s estate in Tarzana, California, at the invitation of the author’s grandson Danton. Seven months after this trip, lead animator Glen Keane made a similar trip to Africa to see for himself the wonders it had to offer.
